This week was a little unusual for my little “online projects” empire-in-training. Not only did I have a site removed from Dreamhost, my usual hosting company of choice, but Google was nice enough to give me a (relatively) huge bonus in my adsense account.
Dreamhost
Generally, I like these guys a lot. So, I’m not soo steamed that they delisted one of my sites for taking up too much of a scarce resource. But come on guys, you promise bandwidth and storage space galore. The gotcha - as soon as a site starts to use a bit of CPU power, you’re not welcome at all.
Along with 1000 other people, I’ve got a “proxy site” - a site that lets you get around common web filters found at work and school. Not a big money maker, but traffic was starting to go up. Boom - delisted by Dreamhost.
I’m still staying with Dreamhost, and I still recommend them for people with a lot of small sites (like most of my other ones). But as soon as a site gets any traffic, it’s time to move. To where? I’ll cover that in the future. In the meantime, if you’d like to try Dreamhost out, please, visit their site, and use SLUMLORDS as a coupon code. It will save you $49.95 off any plan, which covers the setup fee for most of them. It also helps me out a bit.
Now, to Google.
While larger publishers are used to getting hundreds or thousands of dollars a month, my meager earnings are usually not enough to buy even a coffee a day. At Tim Hortons. So when I logged into Adsense today and saw that my monthly earnings were about 10x their usual, I almost fell out of my chair. What happened? Well, it seems they’ve upped the amount they give for referrals, by a lot. Some kind soul clicked on my Adsense, and then earned some money. Thank you!
If you’re one of the few who hasn’t yet signed up for adsense, feel free to try it out - it’s free, you’ll make money whenever anyone clicks on an ad, and if you earn enough, you’ll put another big smile on my face.
