It’s all their fault, really. For the last two years I’ve been registering domains through GoDaddy, and every time I register a new domain, renew an old one, or go anywhere near their site, they bombard me with “ROBERTHOF.COM is still available! Register it Today!”

I held out as long as I could - really, I did. But yesterday I couldn’t resist. I had excess money in my paypal account (thanks Dreamhost!) and figured why not. I’ve been upsold. Marketing works.

But why another blog? Isnt the intarweb overflowing with millions of neglected and useless blogs about nothing at all? Sure it is. But I’ve never actually done one, and if this one sinks to the bottom of the pile, so be it. I’ve had a bit of enjoyment, and found a use for a domain I probably never should have registered. Thanks again GoDaddy. Enjoy your $8.

Oh, and another thing. It seems that, rare as my name is, there are at least two other Robert Hofs in North America who rate well in Google. One is a writer - he’s much more eloquent than I. The other is a real estate guy in Ottawa. I’m sure I’ll write about them in the future, but for now, I just wanted to say hi.

Hi.

  1. Hi there. I’m the Rob “writer” Hof. Not immune to egosurfing occasionally, I’ve seen your name and doings for years now, especially given that I write about the Internet. Just wanted to say hi myself.

Actually, one more thing: How do you pronounce your last name? We somehow have retained the more-or-less German pronunciation (with a long O) for four or five generations in the U.S. The advantage is, I always know who’s a telemarketer when I answer the phone….

  2. Hi Rob, glad to meet you - more comments when it’s not 2am.

As for pronunciation, I’m in the “Hawf” category, rather than the “Hoef”, or as my employers prefer, “Huff”.

    Glad to virtually meet.

    Take care,

    Robert “w” Hof
