So I’m lying on my bed last night, around midnight, nodding off to an uninspiring game of Sit’nGo Texas Hold’em. An attractive picture, I’m sure.

Bing! My friend from Toronto messages me on MSN. She’s traipsing around South America right now with a friend from Australia, so I expect it’s the end of the day for her and she wants to pass along some interesting travel tale, making me instantly jealous of her. Unfortunately it’s not the case - she’s in Cuzco Peru, and her friend is having a bit of a medical emergency.

Why would a girl in Peru MSN a guy in Bermuda about an Australian girl with a medical issue?  Her hostel, a hotbed of international travelers, can’t seem to make a call to Australia to notify her travel companion’s insurance company. So, helpful soul that I am, I proceed to call Australia on my Skype-Out. After sorting through a few difficulties, the insurance company and the sick traveller are united, and I can get back to my poker.

Think about it - Peru via MSN to Bermuda, via Skype to Australia. This convoluted path was easier than making a long distance phone call in Peru. Welcome to the connected world.

My good deed done for the month, I managed to maintain my composure throughout the chaos, and to finish second.
